Gaines and Company Celebrates 7 Years of Smart Digging

From sidewalk repairs to federal installations, Gaines and Company crews take time to do the job right the first time.

Some may say that as turnkey site development experts, our Gaines and Company crews like to play in the dirt. While this is 100% accurate (maybe we are just big kids at heart), our experts are doing much more than playing in the dirt when they step onto one of our job sites. Not only do our crews work safely, but they also work smartly. Gaines and Company’s last seven years are a perfect example of smart excavation work.

Gaines and Company has over 60 years of site development experience in underground utilities, grading and excavating, sediment and erosion controls, road work, storm water management, and federal installations. We have worked for clients that span industries from residential building and municipal authorities to utility construction and the federal military.

“The nature of our work varies with each project. Therefore, our crews have a lot to continually watch for while they are working,” said Safety Director Dominic Pope. “First and foremost, they need to watch out for each other. They also need to know what’s going on below the dirt.”

When underground utility infrastructure is damaged, it can cause injury, environmental damage, and service interruptions. Underground utilities can be located with certainty by contacting the local 811 one-call center – who identifies underground infrastructure – prior to work.

Gaines and Company crew member works in a trench box while wearing a shirt that reads, “We dig safety.” The safety-first mentality not only keeps crews safe, but also protects underground infrastructure, the environment, and the community.

Gaines and Company has a reputation of not only safe digging, but smart digging, too. In the last five years alone, we were awarded the Miss Utility 2018 Dig Smart Honorable Mention Award, followed by the Dig Smart Award in both 2019 and 2020. As we now embark into 2023, our Maryland team is proud to celebrate seven years damage-free with 811.

“This achievement took a team effort throughout our organization. Leadership created and continually supports a work culture focused on quality, safety, and ethics. Our crews – led onsite by supervisors and foreman – value strong jobsite communication, a safety-first mindset, and adherence to procedures,” said Dominic. “They don’t cut corners. They are diligent in locating underground infrastructure and pre-work one-call practices.”

That is where the saying, “Work smarter, not harder” comes to play.

The Gaines and Company leadership team was presented the 2020 Dig Smart Award by Dora Parks, manager of client relations for Miss Utility of Maryland.

Dominic added, “Let’s face it, it’s easier to do the work right once than have to go back and fix mistakes. And that’s what sets us apart from other contractors. Most site development contractors don’t work that way. By working smarter, we deliver reliable work safely and correctly the first time. These practices not only ensure the safety of our crews, but they also prevent damage to infrastructure and the environment, as well as eliminates interruptions to utility services.”

Professional site development services entail much more than moving dirt. Partner with a trusted contractor like Gaines and Company who not only delivers safe, quality projects, but works smartly to benefit the project, community, and environment.
