Safe Digging Month: More Than an Industry Observance for Gaines and Company

Gaines and Company utilizes industry-leading processes and equipment to ensure safe digging operations, such as hydro excavation trucks (“hydrovacs”). Hydrovacs apply high-pressure water and powerful suction to break up the soil. This eliminates the use of sharp, metal equipment, which is the cause of many digging incidents.

The site development experts at Gaines and Company take pride in their safe, quality work. Their specialized services – which include underground utilities, grading, excavating, erosion controls, and road work – require strict adherences to operational and environmental regulations, as well as precise and diligent attention to details. A familiar challenge across the industry is performing safe digging operations. Gaines and Company’s proven safe digging record sets them apart from competition.

Gaines and Company joins companies across the industry in celebrating April’s National Digging Safety Month. But safe digging is more than a yearly observance for Gaines and Company. It is a way of operating. In fact, Gaines and Company has been recognized for its organization-wide diligence to safe digging practices by being awarded the acclaimed Miss Utility Dig Smart Award for the past two consecutive years.

“I don’t credit our safe digging success to specific policies and procedures, training, or crews. The reason why Gaines and Company is an industry leader in safe digging practices has been a team effort. It starts with upper management, incorporates employees at all levels throughout all departments, spreads through superintendents and foreman, and is evident with the safe work of our crews actually performing the digging,” said Safety Director Dominic Pope. “Everyone has done such a great job doing their part.”

Safe digging is crucial in the successful delivery of Gaines and Company’s projects. Utility lines are buried underground throughout neighborhoods, municipalities, and cities. Whether working on a minor home project or delivering a federal installation, anyone who digs must be aware of what is underground. 8-1-1 is the national “call-before-you-dig” hotline for homeowners and contractors throughout the country. The basis of the prevention program is to dial 8-1-1 prior to digging so underground utility lines can be identified. Failure to indicate these lines before starting a project could result in injury, property damage, and utility interruption.

Gaines and Company received the Miss Utility Smart Dig Award two years in a row.
