Elmer Garcia Receives Safety Excellence Achievement Award

Crews at Gaines and Company remain safe on the job site thanks to workers like Elmer Garcia, who is always assessing work conditions, tools, and equipment. Gaines and Company recognizes employees who consistently surpass safety requirements and enhance the company’s safety culture with the Safety Excellence Achievement Award.
Gaines and Company presents the Safety Excellence Achievement Award to employees once a quarter at both its Maryland and North Carolina locations.
Recipients are nominated for a safety performance that exceeds industry and company requirements. In the construction industry where safety hazards are always present, award recognition is not easy.
Elmer Garcia is a crew mainline excavator for Gaines and Company’s Utilities division in Maryland. He has the difficult job of making sure trenches are safely dug and secured before laying pipe.
“Elmer has a lot of responsibility in his role,” said Ever Sorto, Elmer’s foreman who nominated him for the award. “Elmer doesn’t let anyone proceed with work unless it is safe. I can trust that he is always a second set of eyes on the job, not just watching out for himself, but our entire crew.”
Starting as a laborer with Gaines and Company 12 years ago, Elmer worked his way into his current role, building upon his experience and skills throughout his career. He is OSHA 10 certified and has completed Competent Person Excavation training.
“Elmer is very assertive, which is exactly what is needed in his role to make sure everyone stays safe,” said Safety Director Dominic Pope. “Thanks to his experience and time with our organization, he works with a focus on safety while simultaneously delivering expert construction services.”
Dominic Pope awarded Elmer with a Safety Excellence Achievement Award certificate, exclusive award recipient hat, and $150 in safety bucks to use on gear on the company’s online safety store. Elmer’s achievements will also be considered for the year-end 2022 Safety Excellence Award.
Gaines and Company is a full-service grading and excavation company with nearly 70 years of experience, including underground utilities, grading and excavating, sediment and erosion controls, and road work. The organization is proud of their groundbreaking safety excellence program. In both the Maryland and North Carolina divisions, a Safety Excellence Achievement Award is given on a quarterly basis to employees who go above and beyond in their dedication to safety.
