Gaines and Company Successfully Completes Presidential Parkway Project in Washington D.C.
Gaines and Company, a turnkey site development contractor, completed the Presidential Parkway project, a major infrastructure development in Washington D.C. The project involved the construction of a one-mile extension of the existing Presidential Parkway, connecting the Westphalia development to Machinist Place. This new roadway will serve as a spine for future industrial facilities in the area.
Project Details:
- Developer: Walton Development
- Location: Presidential Parkway, Washington D.C., with Pennsylvania Avenue running nearby and ultimately leading to the White House area.
- Scope of Work:
- 1 mile of new roadway construction
- Installation of 3 large underground culvert crossings
- Installation of over 14,800 linear feet of utilities (sewer, storm drain, water main)
- Redirecting a stream & erosion control
- Subcontractors: Multiple subcontractors were involved for various aspects of the project, including curb pouring, asphalt paving (M.T. Laney), concrete (Eureka Concrete), and other site work outside the roadway itself.
The project encompassed various aspects of site development, including:
- Roadway construction: Over one mile of new roadway was built, providing a vital connection for future development.
- Stormwater management: To prepare for significant stormwater runoff, 3 iterations of culvert were installed in order to properly redirect an underground stream:
- 1 – 48” plastic double barrels
- 2 – Corrugated metal as temporary bypass culverts
- 3 – Finally, permanent reinforced concrete pipe (RCP)
- The final installation featured three large underground culvert crossings to collect and manage stormwater runoff from nearby developments. These culverts included:
- 100 linear feet of 60-inch RCP with cast-in-place end walls
- 230 linear feet of dual run 9-foot by 12-foot box culvert sections
- 225 linear feet of single run 6-foot by 6-foot box culvert sections
- Utility installation: The project also included the installation of essential utilities, including sewer lines, storm drains, and water mains, totaling over 4,300 linear feet of sewer, 5,300 linear feet of storm drain, and 5,200 linear feet of water main.
Overcoming Challenges
The project presented several challenges:
- Culvert crossing installation meeting environmental requirements: Installing culverts that met strict environmental regulations while maintaining proper water flow was a complex task.
- Changing site conditions (weather): The project team had to adapt to constantly changing weather conditions, ensuring construction remained safe and on schedule.
Despite the challenges, Gaines and Company’s dedicated and experienced crews were able to overcome these obstacles and deliver the project on time and within budget. Their meticulous attention to environmental regulations and their ability to adapt to changing weather conditions were crucial to the project’s success.
“We’re proud of every crew member involved with safely getting the Presidential Parkway project to completion,” said Dominic Pope, Safety Director at Gaines and Company. “This project showcases our incredible crews and how they can adapt to changing factors and the unknown in all kinds of specialties, from road construction and utility installation to stormwater management while adhering to strict environmental regulations.
