Gaines and Company Drivers Are Among the Best
(And We’re Not the Only Ones Who Think That)
2022 MMTA Drivers of the Month
Gaines and Company is proud to announce that Driver Shawn Gibson was recognized on January 26 in Ellicott City, Maryland, as Maryland Motor Truck Association’s (MMTA) Driver of the Month for July 2022. The award is a recognition of Shawn’s driving excellence by a team of trucking professionals and Maryland State Police.
“The MMTA award is certainly a symbol of Shawn’s excellence,” said Safety Director Dominic Pope. “It’s about more than excellent driving skills, though. It’s also about his commitment to public safety, as well. Drivers like Shawn put in 250-300 miles a day. To spend that much time on the roadways in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and without incidents is pretty remarkable.”
Shawn Gibson joined Gaines and Company 9 years ago. After just a couple of years with the company, he earned his Class A CDL (commercial driver’s license).
He has also completed all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) training, which includes associated Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements.
Shawn is responsible for moving equipment, materials, and tools to and from the job sites, such as supplying job sites with necessary tools and equipment and clearing project sites of all unused materials and supplies at the conclusion of a project. His work requires him to drive on both dirt job sites and major highways.
“I nominated Shawn for this award because he is just an all-around great driver. In his 9 years with Gaines, he has driven 350,000-500,000 miles without a single incident – and I mean at-fault or not-at-fault,” said Dominic. “He doesn’t rush to get the job done. Instead, he works safely and intentionally to make sure he gets the job done right.”

MMTA, which was established in 1935, is a member-driven non-profit organization that represents over 1,000 companies. Its mission is to support, advocate, and educate for a safe, efficient, and profitable trucking industry in Maryland. MMTA’s Driver of the Month recognition is chosen by Maryland State Police after reviewing all nominees’ driving records, years of service, and community involvement.
Shawn’s proud wife, Kim, accompanied him to the awards banquet.
“I am so proud of our entire Gaines and Company team. After all, it’s because of them that our organization has an industry-wide reputation of safe, quality work,” said Gaines and Company Vice President David Gaines. “But it’s employees like Shawn who really make us shine. His number one commitment is to the safety of our employees and the public, and he tries very hard to not let anything jeopardize that.”
2022 marks the second consecutive year that a Gaines and Company driver was recognized with MMTA’s Driver of the Month award. In 2021, Robert (Bobby) Aberts was selected by the Maryland State Police as June 2021’s Driver of the Month.
