North Carolina Q2 Safety Excellence Award Recipients

Luis Ramirez is the Q2 2019 Gaines and Company safety excellence awardee for North Carolina. Luis receives top recognition for safety leadership of crews and the public.
- Stands out in safety because: Luis is a natural safety leader. “He’s been on some tough underground utility construction jobs in the past year and is always thinking about every crewmember’s safety.” Dominic Pope, Safety Director, Gaines and Company
- What he does: Luis is a main line utility excavator who oversees trenching and excavation safety, ensuring trench boxes are installed properly and sloping is done correctly. He has been promoted often during his 19 years with Gaines and Company.
- Nominated by: Foreman Joe Fulton who says, Luis is a “Safety Rockstar.”
- Dominic says: “He always helps out new employees, shows them the correct way to do things and how to work safely.”
- His foreman says: “He’s an employee you can trust with any job and know he’s going to get it done safely and efficiently.”
- Safety values: He looks out for new employees and has an expert level of trench safety knowledge. Luis readily steps into a safety managerial position if a foreman has to be on the other side of a jobsite. “When Joe has to be on the other side of the airport, he knows Luis will step into the safety position.” Dominic Pope, Safety Director, Gaines and Company about safety at the current RDU project.
- Safety e-store: Luis received $150 in safety bucks good towards gear from the online store for items like hats, coolers and thermoses.
- Continuing safety recognition throughout the year and beyond: Luis qualifies for the 2019 year-end safety excellence grand prize. This is his first individual award. He recently received two crew safety awards including annual crew of the year.
Gaines and Company is an underground utility services contractor with a groundbreaking safety excellence program. In both the Maryland and North Carolina divisions, a Safety Excellence Achievement Award is given on a quarterly basis to any employee who goes above and beyond in their dedication to safety.
