Excellence in Safety Awarded to Travis Scerra – North Carolina 4th Quarter Recipient

Travis Scerra — Gaines and Company 4th Q, 2019 Safety Excellence Awardee, (North Carolina) next to Mark Butcher (Site Superintendent) standing in front of Gaines and Company equipment.

Travis Scerra, who joined Gaines and Company in 2017, was the winner of the quarterly Gaines and Company North Carolina safety recognition award. He was presented the excellence award for his outstanding attention to safety details—following safety protocol for himself as well as watching out for others on the job—and has emerged as a shining example of Gaines and Company’s safety culture.

Mr. Scerra, a skilled unground utility worker responsible for laying the conduits and pipelines prior to utility tie-ins, often operates in confined spaces. That and more, did not go unnoticed by his foreman, Kyle Felone, who nominated Travis, and Mark Butcher, [a field superintendent with Gaines] both noticed Travis from the beginning. Mr. Butcher states that “Travis is an up-and-comer and has an eye for details; especially when it comes to safety. His safety [gear and practices] is always top-notch and is content working at complex jobs … always looking at the next challenge within those site development construction jobs.”

Kyle was impressed by Travis from the start, saying,“…Travis is consistent, and for as long as he has been working for me, I have not once had to remind him to put on his hard hat, safety vest, or any other piece of PPE. He is the first to remind the other guys (including me) to put on safety gear, and consistently organizes and checks all tools and rigging equipment. He knows the truck’s layout better than I do and keeps it that way…he genuinely cares about doing things the right way.”

Travis holds many safety certifications including Competent Person Training, OSHA 10, Confined Space, Fire Protection, PPE, and more and is in complete alignment with the safety values and practices at Gaines and Company. Dominic Pope—Safety Director—points out, “Travis is an exceptional addition to our team and safety culture. He puts safety first every day, compliant with every aspect of it, and actively spreads the message with mentoring and leadership.”

As part of Travis’s award, he received credit in the form of “safety bucks” to the company safety e-store where he can purchase various gear like jackets, steel toe boots and high-quality work gloves. It’s all part of an ongoing incentive program to keep safety in the forefront with continuing safety recognition throughout the year, including more to come in 2020 as Gaines and Company will be awarding the year-end 2019 grand prize winners, both in Maryland and North Carolina locations.

Gaines and Company is a full-service site development company with an award- winning safety excellence program. In both the Maryland and North Carolina divisions, a Safety Excellence Achievement Award is given on a quarterly basis to any employee who goes above and beyond in their dedication to safety.
